Chateauneuf du Pape

Chateauneuf du Pape | approx 1 hour from L’Isle sur la Sorgues

A tour of Chateauneuf du Pape is a true highlight for many visiting Provence. Mondays are usually good for tours here (during the summer season) as most things are closed in towns (for shopping, etc, Monday here is like Sunday in North America). Call in advance to book times for your group to ensure your space.

Start off by having lunch in the town of Chateauneuf at around noon – in the heart of the village you’ll find a terrific pizza and salad place. Try the Pizza Chateauneuvoise! When you’ve finished your lunch in the sun, head up to Domaine de la Charbonniere for a tour and tasting with Carol Maret, the daughter of Michel the winemaker. The winery can be found in the direction of Court-hezon. The Tour and tasting will take about an hour.

After visiting Carol, drive back into the town of Chateauneuf and head to the castle ruins at the top of the hill. This structure earned the village its name, translating to ‘the Pope’s new house’. Park at the top of the hill and take a few pictures, it’s gorgeous. The mountains you see off in the distance will be the Ventoux.
Follow the path below the chateau that heads down into the city. The second entrance on your left will be the Cave du Verger des Papes. You need to make your booking here in advance.
