Carved into the rocks high in the Alpilles mountains, Les Baux de Provence is one of the most popular tourist sites in France and one of the oldest. The unique vantage point of Les Baux made the area a hot commodity, providing benefits for inhabitants since as early as the 10th century with both security and astounding views over Arles and Camargue. Over the years it became the site of many violent struggles for the land and was ordered to be demolished and reconstructed, again and again. Today, any permanent residents have packed up and shipped out, leaving a whopping 22 historical buildings to be explored by tourists – who come in by the busload. Don’t let the crowds deter you from a visit, though, because the site is busy for a reason: it’s too impressive to miss. Visit early or late in the day to avoid the heaviest crowds. A highlight of a visit is certainly a trip to the Château des Baux de Provence, a medieval fortress with a tumultuous military past. The ruins remaining are impressive and well maintained and there is an audio guide that will enhance your experience. Get a real medieval feeling by checking out the live catapult firings they put on every day!
