Sitting high on a mountain ridge, this picturesque medieval village is worth a visit, though it’s often overlooked by visitors.  When you visit, check out the ancient sundial above the doorway at the town hall and don’t miss the real highlight, Chateau-de-Sade.  The chateau, today largely in ruins, has an almost storybook look to it from a distance and is where the infamous libertine writer Marquis de Sade lived out some 30 years of his life – the years he wasn’t imprisoned for his scandalous acts and literature.

Currently the chateau is undergoing a wall-by-wall restoration project, which has the interior closed off to visitors.  But you can still get up close on the outside and peer into the home of the risqué libertine who lived here in years past.    Throughout town you’ll find little in the way of commerce, making it ideal for a quick stop as you explore the countryside.  In July, the town sees its other claim to fame, the Festival Lacoste, a dramatic celebration of theatre, cinema, music, dance and other forms of performance art.
